About the event: Dementia Alliance International (DAI) is a registered charity whose membership is inclusively for people of all ages, with any type of a dementia globally, seeking to represent, support, and educate others living with the disease, and the wider dementia community. DAI members also campaign locally, nationally and globally for our rights, individual autonomy, also why we have joined the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older Persons #AgeWithRights Global Rally. The 2022 rally was launched on 3rd March 202s, and it is imperative we join them to ensure the more than 55 million people with dementia are not left behind.
On the GAROP Global Rally page, it says: People around the world unite and call on their governments to support the stronger protection and promotion of older people’s human rights. The Global Rally is taking place 6 weeks ahead of the next annual Working Group meeting of governments and other stakeholders on older people’s human rights at the United Nations (UN) in New York from 11-14th April 2022. Government participation in the meeting in 2021 was poor and so we must join forces globally this year and be as visible and vocal as possible. Our goal is “To urge governments to participate actively in the UN Working Group meeting in April and support a new UN convention on the rights of older people.”
About our speakers: Our three speakers are all very active members of the Dementia Alliance International. Emily Ong who is based in Singapore, is currently an Acting DAI co-chair, Lyn Rogers lives in a residential care facility in Victoria Australia, and Kate Swaffer is a co-founder and the interim Human Rights Advisor to DAI. They are all very active campaigners for the rights of everyone, including people diagnosed with dementia and older persons globally, plus, they are dynamic speakers, who have all had many of their rights violated regularly since being diagnosed with varying forms of dementia.
